Welcome
My idea of starting this blog stems from wanting to provide any individual wanting to learn the piano the opportunity to do so. This is my very first blog so bear with me. I have been teaching piano privately to students for the past seven years and enjoy it tremendously. I teach all styles and levels and would like to eventually incorporate all that information in detail into each blog.
To Listen Is To Learn
To begin with I have noticed as a teacher that a great amount of musical ability can be achieved by listening to music. Your ear must be able to hear what is going on and the best way for that to happen is to inundate and immerse yourself with music. The absolute best way to learn a foreign language is to be around others who speak that daily. Gradually your ear becomes more attentive to sounds, words, phrases and the like. Why should it be any different when learning an instrument. Music in itself is a language and in order to speak it you must be around it. I encourage you to not listen only to your favorite style like maybe rap, or rock strictly; but begin to take a listen to other styles as well. You will develop a very healthy musical ear.
Know Thy Hands
Now the very next step is to know your finger numbers. What do I mean by that? Well in order to begin playing we need a reference point, not only on the piano but the hands as well. You may notice in some pieces of music there are small numbers above those little black dots on the page. Those are finger numbers and give you a good idea of what finger to use to play a particular note. Now this is really easy but I still encourage you to practice these over the week so you know them solid on both hands.
The thumbs are always number 1. So to practice this you can hold both hands out in front of you as if you are telling someone to STOP, palms facing away from you, and just move the thumbs in a wiggle motion saying “one” out loud or to yourself.
Then the pointer fingers or index fingers in either hand are number 2. Using the same position of the hands as above practice the same wiggle motion as you did with the thumbs saying “two”.
The middle fingers are number 3. Repeat the same movement saying the finger number.
The ring fingers or the ones directly next to the pinky are 4. Same movement.
And lastly the pinky or smallest fingers are number 5. Same movement.
How To Apply
Practice this entire exercise daily and when you feel confident enough try mixing up the finger numbers to see if your fingers can keep up. For instance instead of beginning with 1, start with 3, and your middle fingers should move. Then pick another random number from 1 to 5. Then move that finger. Suggestion: Have a friend call out any number one through five, and see how long it takes you to begin moving that finger number. Until next time and God Bless.
